Dr. Deborah Chetcuti is the head of the Department of Mathematics, Science & Technical Education at the University of Malta. The University of Malta is the highest teaching institution in Malta. It is publicly funded and is open to all those who have the requisite qualifications. Over the past few years, the University has reviewed its structures in order to be in line with the Bologna process and the European Higher Education Area. The University of Malta is a member of the European University Association, the European Access Network, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the Utrecht Network, the Santander Network, the Compostela Group, the European Association for University Lifelong Learning (EUCEN) and the International Student Exchange Programme (ISEP). Priority research areas at the University include: Information & Communication Technology, Engineering, Criminology and Sustainable Environmental Resource Management. The Department of Mathematics, Science and Technical Education (DMSTE) was set-up in 1991 and now has over 24 full-time members of staff. Over the years it has become a dynamic department which offers a variety of courses both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Its members have been involved in a number of international research projects and initiatives and have established links with foreign universities and academic institutions. The Department of Mathematics, Science and Technical Education (DMSTE) was set-up in 1991 and now has over 24 full-time members of staff. Over the years it has become a dynamic department which offers a variety of courses both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Its members have been involved in a number of international research projects and initiatives and have established links with foreign universities and academic institutions. The department strives to prepare students to be effective and reflective teachers in a variety of curriculum subjects which are taught in the secondary and post-secondary sectors; to initiate and participate in research both regarding broad educational issues as well as specific curricular areas with the aim of informing educators and policy makers and to anticipate and respond to the educational needs of the community and pursuing academic and professional excellence.
